The...

What I ate yesterday (in reverse chronological order).

The complete set on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/runhayleyrun/archives/date-taken/2010/05/10/

The photo that was taken after dropping (and basically breaking) the camera http://www.flickr.com/photos/runhayleyrun/4598860536/in/datetaken/

Well, I am awesome

I managed to trash my trusty point&shoot camera tonight. It’s an ancient Canon SD300 that I think I bought in like 2003/2004. And I started using it for food photos on July 18th, 2007.

Apparently it doesn’t like to be dropped.

In the case that anyone here is camera savvy enough to tell me if it can be fixed, here’s what’s happening.

First, shooting video is still fine, so at least the camera’s not a complete throwaway item. However, the still photos are completely jacked (and of course, I used the camera 99% of the time to take still photos of the food, so this sucks):

it overexposes everything. I’m guessing whatever senses the ambient light is basically broken.

it leaves lines on photos. If I were smart, I’d have a sample photo available of this. But I don’t. I’m guessing this indicates that the CMOS sensor or whatnot is kaputt, because it looks fine on the LCD, before I actually take the photo.

So in summary: #$%^ !

I don’t have the money to replace the camera, so my backups are my ancient DSLR (not very portable and don’t own a case for it) and my iPhone.

Currently, I’m thinking my iPhone wins out since I’m carrying it with me everywhere anyway.

I have concerns though. Such as:

it geotags everything. I know it can be disabled.. somewhere, but the problem with that is that I do want some stuff geotagged. Flickr would be the destination for the public photos, so I guess I’m gonna have to do some digging to find out how to either 1) strip the location data 2) prevent it from being accessed.

if I can drop a camera, ya know, a piece of equipment designed to easily held and used for taking pictures, the likelihood that I’ll drop my iPhone when taking a picture… oh about 1000 times more likely.

So again: #$%^ !

194.7

195.8

195.6

I peaked at 200.0 on the 18th and was as low as 193.1 on the 22nd.

second barefoot walk of the season

On March 30th, I did a 2+ mile walk barefoot.

It was horrible.

I would’ve been fine if it weren’t for a very long stretch of road where the sidewalk was littered with the sand truck debris left over from the difficult winter. Walking in the grass didn’t help either because the grass was still very very dry, and very very pointy at that point.

I survived that portion of the walk by alternating between the sand and the sharp grass.

I ended up with two lovely, mirror-image blisters. I wore my VFFs the rest of the day and was fine, but taking them off later that night induced a sensation that part of my foot was going to come off with it.

So I ended up barefoot last night for the second time of the season.

Sadly, the sand is still everywhere.

Since I was a thick-padded, running shoes type of gal up until July or so when I bought some Vibrams, I was completely unaware of the sand last year. I have no clue how long this problem is going to last. I assume that it will end up getting washed into the storm drains at some point, but we’ve had a decent amount of rain already and no luck so far.

I suppose I’ll just have to grin and bear it in the meanwhile and build up a tolerance slowly.

Because the barefooters are right. Minimalist footwear isn’t the same as going completely barefoot.

And it’s kinda neat to feel all of those little bits of sand beneath your feet.

Even if you end up with monster blisters.

197.5

196.9

where I've been + why I've gained

To publicly answer two recent replies:

thatgirlnamedsmash:

Where have you been?

eddoeslife:

Hey - don’t think that I haven’t noticed that your weight is creeping up. And without some back-story. What’s going on?

Where have I been?

Short answer: on my yelyah tumblr.

Why have I gained?

On February 1st, I was 182.3. This morning, I was 195.8.

Basically I can attribute the weight gain to 3 things:

music

money

weather

Weather

The winter really sucked. Despite my name here, I had actually been more of a biker than a runner, in the fall months. And I didn’t get to bike at all over the winter (I’m not gonna risk a slushy crash). And with it being bone-chilling cold and icy/snowy a large chunk of the time, it made it really difficult to stay motivated to keep running (no gym membership).

So the winter months made it really easy to fall out of shape.

Money

I’d be skipping over an ever intensifying reason if I didn’t bring this up.

I’m running out of money, so in addition to the toll that the winter took on me and the re-instilling of bad habits, it has become much more difficult to choose the healthy, expensive option over the cheap, immediate-gratification option.

One bright side is that once I’m eligible for food stamps, our farmers’ market actually can accept them (no clue how common that is), so at least there will be some healthy options (now whether food stamps would actually be able to cover a month of healthy eating… I have no clue).

Music

As I kinda predicted in my secret life as a songwriter, I kinda felt that getting back into writing music would signal the death of the run-hayley-run project (I started RHR in the midst of a 5 month songwriting drought).

And though this tumblr hasn’t completely died, basically all of the time that I was spending on run-hayley-run, now gets spent on music-related things.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I feel sad that I’m no longer active in this community - a community that was such a huge part of my life for so many months. And I have to admit I’m grateful for the experience because, as overly passionate as I was about food and health and the whole community here, I was able to discover that I was more passionate about music. Basically, it actually strengthened my desire to pursue music, because I had a slightly-less passionate experience to compare it to.

These Days

Music-wise, I’m writing at least a song a day (though I did a “24 hour album” (24 minutes of music composed in 24 hours) back in March with quite mixed results), and trying to learn as much as I can. You can follow my yelyah music tumblr if you want to see what I’m up to over there.

Health-wise, now that spring is finally here, I am looking forward to getting out more, and trying to reclaim (nay, exceed!) what I accomplished last year. And I have musical motivation, too, because I’m still trying to strengthen the vocal power that I lost for unknown reasons many years ago, and I’m hoping that eating healthy (cutting out the dairy especially), and getting in shape will aid in that.

To everyone here, I hope you achieve everything you reach for!

where are yoooou?

Depends on whether you mean where was I during my absence (getting answered in a post shortly) or where am I physically located?

In the case of the second, tornado alley is as specific as I get in public. :)

195.8

195.3

195.6

I peaked recently at 196.9.

I am of course thrilled that the farmer’s market started this weekend (still not a whole lot that’s in season though), as I really need to get back to eating fresh fruit and veggies instead of all of this processed junk that sustained me through the winter.

189.4

Friday: 187.8

Sunday: 192.0

Today: 189.4

Actually, I’m not all certain why there was a gain for both Saturday and Sunday, nor why I lost all of it (and more) from Sunday to Monday.
